Greater plantain (Plantago major) at a roadside. Greater plantain is a very persistant weed common to disturbed ground. It has a shallow root system which enables it to inhabit crevices and cracks in roads and paths. It is resistant to treading and is tolerant of both drought and water logging. Its seeds remain viable for up to five years in cultivated ground and between twenty and fifty years in uncultivated ground.
