Root tip. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the root of a young poppy seedling. The numerous root hairs (yellow) increase the surface area of the root to maximise uptake of water and nutrients. At the very tip of the root is a hairless root cap which protects the root. Just above this is the apical meristem, an area of rapidly dividing cells where most growth takes place.
