Teasel flower. View of a card teasel Dipsacus sylvestris in bloom. The teasel is a tall plant which inhabits bare or grassy land. The small individual flowers grow from a large egg-shaped head. The male parts of the flowers, the anthers, are borne on long mauve stamens, and produce pollen. The female parts of the flowers, the carpels, are concealed and protected by the spiky flower head. Here, the later stages of flowering are seen. The flowers begin to grow around the centre of the head, and as they die, the growth spreads to the ends.
