Pandanus fruit. The ripe fruit of the pandanus palm (Pandanus tectorius) or screwpine. The wedge- shaped orange sections (drupes) are eaten raw or cooked and its fibres used as a natural dental floss. The pandanus palm can grow to 8 metres in height, and its long pointed leaves up to 2 metres in length. It is an economically important plant and is a major source of food to communities living on atolls. The palms leaves are woven or plaited into mats, sails and thatch.
