Earthquake damage, Basel cathedral, Switzerland. The crack at lower right was caused by a large earthquake (moment magnitude estimated at 6.9) that struck Basel on 18 October 1356. This part of the cathedral, which includes this window, the Wheel of Fortune, on the western wall, is the oldest remaining part of the cathedral. The building of the cathedral began in 1019. The construction material seen here is sandstone.
