Rock formed from loess. Loess is a fertile aeolian (wind-borne) sediment, formed as soil particles are transported and deposited by the wind. Loess plateaus (like those in China) can tell geologists about ancient wind patterns. Loess that gets buried at a shallow depth after being overlain by other sediments becomes lithified, as seen here, and is then called loesskindel. This loesskindel sample is from Europe and is periglacial, having been covered by the glaciers. It is formed from sediment deposition from the Sahara, indicating wind patterns similar to those seen today. This sample is from southern Germany.
