Volcanic tuff. Tuff is a rock formed by the consolidation of volcanic ash. This sample is from the Paisaje Lunar Negro, Canadas, Tenerife, the Canary Islands. The spectacular desolate moon-like landscape of the Canadas caldera contains areas of both black and white tuff. See E417/342 for the white tuff.
