Herkimer diamonds. Herkimer diamonds are not real diamonds but rather consist of very clear quartz, a silicon dioxide mineral. They are used as decorative stones in jewellery. These samples were found inside the rock shown, which dates from the Cambrian era (540-490 million years ago). The largest stone shown here measures 14 millimetres across.
