Tuang child (Australopithecus africanus)skull. The Tuang child fossil was discovered in 1924 in Tuang, South Africa. The child, an example of A. africanus, is believed to have been about 3 years old at the time of its death. A. africanus was a bipedal ape living in Africa 3-2 million years ago. The skull is similar to that of a chimpanzee, although A. africanus had more human-like teeth and a slightly larger brain capacity.
