View of Los Angeles and the Californian coast, taken by the crew of Shuttle Discovery during Mission STS- 39 of 28 April-6 May 1991. Los Angeles is the pale area surrounding the promontory just above centre frame. On the southern side of the promontory are extensive docks in the harbour area of Long Beach. To the south of the city is the dark line of the Santa Ana Mountains, whilst the San Gabriel Mountains fill the top right corner. The dark area on the coast at top centre contains the Santa Monica Mountains, the southern edge of which houses the suburbs of Beverly Hills and Hollywood. The island at centre left is Santa Catalina, about 40km off the coast.
