Virtual reality archaeology. Archaeologist using a handheld computer and GPS (global positioning system) equipment to gather data for a computer model of the Via Appia (Appian Way), Rome, Italy. The Via Appia is an ancient Roman road that runs from Rome to Brindisi. This stretch of the road is part of the Via Appia Antica, an ancient part of the road that is near Rome. The Via Appia Antica is now part of a nature and archaeological park, the Parco Regionale dell'Appia Antica. Roman ruins are found alongside the road, including carved marble statues and mausoleums. This work is being done as part of a project to record the archaeological heritage of Rome in the form of interactive virtual reality models.
