William Francis Hillebrand (1853-1925), German- American chemist. Born in Honolulu, Hillebrand studied in the US and Germany. He joined the US Geological Survey in 1880 to chemically analyse rocks and minerals, and in 1908 he became the chief chemist of the National Bureau of Standards. He oversaw the development of a Standard Reference Materials catalogue. He paid rigorous attention to detail, and was known by his staff as insThe Supreme Court of Analytical Chemistryins. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of America's oldest news picture agencies, which holds images dating from the 1890s to the 1930s.
