George Ellery Hale (1868-1938), US astronomer and astrophysicist, working with equipment used to study the Sun. While still an undergraduate, Hale invented the spectroheliograph, a device used to study the Sun. He founded a number of observatories, including Yerkes and Mount Wilson. He was also editor of the Astrophysical Journal from 1895. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (1904), the Bruce Gold Medal of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (1916), and the Copley Medal of the Royal Society (1932). The Hale Telescope, the Hale Cycle of solar activity, an asteroid, and craters on the Moon and Mars are named after him.
