John Hazlehurst Boneval Latrobe (1803-1891), US philanthropist. Latrobe was an eminent lawyer and is remembered as a supporter of the formation of the country of Liberia for freed slaves. In 1853 he became president of the American Colonization Society that had overseen the founding of Liberia in 1822. Latrobe was also an inventor, devising the Latrobe stove (also called the Baltimore or parlour heater). By 1878, tens of thousands of these stoves were in use across the USA. Latrobe was also a historian, poet and author. Photographed by Mathew Brady.
