John Keast Lord (1818-1872), British naturalist, holding a dog whip. Lord, who qualified as a veterinarian, left England soon after 1844. His subsequent career is not well- recorded, but included a whaling voyage, hunting animals in Canada, and serving in the Crimean War. This photograph is from his time as a naturalist with the British Northwest Boundary Survey (1858- 1862). This expedition surveyed the US-Canada border south of British Columbia. Lord sent animal specimens to the British Museum, and reported his observations in The Naturalist in Vancouver Island and British Columbia (1866).
