Father Stephen Joseph Perry (1833-1889), British astronomer. Perry was ordained as a Jesuit priest in 1866, taking up duties at Stonyhurst College as a teacher of mathematics and physics. He served as the Director of Stonyhurst College Observatory (1860-1863 and 1868-1889). He is best remembered for his astronomical travels to places like Kerguelen (Transit of Venus, 1874) and the West Indies (solar eclipse, 1886). He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1874. He died at sea a few days after falling ill on an eclipse expedition to the Salut Islands.
