School of Pythagoras. The Ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras (c.580-c.490 BC, centre) established an eccentric religious community at Croton, in southern Italy, based on the mystical belief that insall is numberins. The inner circle of followers (mathematikoi), lived here permanently, and were vegetarians and strict ascetics. The outer circle of followers (akousmatics) only attended the teachings during the day.
