Charles Scott Sherrington (1857-1952), British physiologist. Sherrington won the 1932 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine for his work on the nervous system. Sherrington's main work was on reflex motor nerve action in vertebrates. A whole range of neurological terms were coined by him, including synapse, motor unit, neuron pool and others. His book The Integrative Action of the Nervous System (1906) is a landmark in modern physiology. Among his many sporting hobbies were Sunday morning parachute jumps off the tower of a London hospital.
