Ernest Starling. (1866-1927), English physiologist and pioneer endocrinologist. Much of his most renowned work was with W. M. Bayliss who was professor of physiology at University College London, where Starling spent most of his career. They discovered the peristaltic waves of the intestine and also showed that pancreatic digestive juices were secreted due to a specific chemical messenger in the blood. In 1905, Starling coined the term inshormoneins, and thus created the new field of endocrinology. Starling also studied the cardiovascular system and put forward his inslaw of the heartins, where an enlarged heart was stated to be a classic symptom of heart damage.
