Polyp of the colon, gross specimen. Polyps are abnormal growths of tissue (tumours) projecting from a mucous membrane. The tumours arise from glandular epithelial tissue and are called tubular adenomas due to the rounded nature of the glands that form them. Although in this case the tumour is benign, when detected they are removed as they may develop into a malignant cancer if left untreated.
