MODEL RELEASED. MRI scanning. Staff nurse preparing a child patient for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. MRI is a diagnostic technique that produces cross-sectional images of parts of the body, particularly useful for studying soft tissue. The scanner uses a strong magnetic field to produce radio emissions from hydrogen atoms in the body. This is a Siemens MAGNETOM Espree MRI scanner, which was first introduced in 2004. The MAGNETOM Espree was designed with obese or claustrophobic patients in mind, having a wide bore (opening) of 70, rather than 60, centimetres. Photographed at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, UK.
