MODEL RELEASED. Newborn baby after Caesarean. Newborn baby sleeping on a blanket after being delivered by Caesarean section. The white substance on the baby's skin is known as vernix, which lubricates the passage through the birth canal in vaginal deliveries. A clamp (centre right) on the umbilical cord prevents bleeding when the cord is cut. The cord will drop off within 7-10 days. During a Caesarean section, the baby is delivered through an incision made in its mother's abdomen and uterus. This procedure is performed when it is difficult or dangerous to deliver the baby in the normal way. Photographed at St. Mary's Hospital in Lacor, Gulu, Uganda.
