The white substance on the baby's skin is known as vernix, which lubricates the passage through the birth canal in vaginal deliveries. A clamp (centre right) on the umbilical cord prevents bleeding when the cord is cut. The cord will drop off within 7-10 days. During a Caesarean section, the baby is delivered through an incision made in its mother's abdomen and uterus.
