Infantile digestive disorders. Artwork showing some common digestive disorders in infants. Hardened faeces (brown, lower centre) cause constipation. The difficulty in passing faeces has caused an anal fissure (bottom centre, red), a rip in the lining of the anal canal. Inflammation of the appendix (acute appendicitis, lower left), can be misdiagnosed as that of the lymph nodes (mesenteric lymphadenitis, centre left). Intussusception, the folding or telescoping (invagination) of one part of the bowel into another, is seen at lower left and lower centre. This is most common in children under four, and may be fatal.
