MODEL RELEASED. Unwell baby girl, being held by a staff nurse on the ward. This 8 month old baby girl was born prematurely and has suffered from gastroschisis. Gastroschisis is an abdominal wall defect in which the intestines or other organs protrude outside the foetus. In this case the outer protruding section of intestine was removed surgically, a procedure that resulted in short bowel syndrome (SBS). SBS produces malabsorption, a condition in which the body cannot break down and/or absorb sufficient sugars, proteins or fats. She is being pump-fed a broken-down milk mixture through a nasogastric tube. Photographed at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, UK.
