Gastroschisis is an abdominal wall defect in which the intestines or other organs protrude outside the foetus. In this case the outer protruding section of intestine was removed surgically, a procedure that resulted in short bowel syndrome (SBS). SBS produces malabsorption, a condition in which the body cannot break down and/or absorb sufficient sugars, proteins or fats.
