Cartilage tissue. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a cartilaginous capsule (centre) in the hyaline articular cartilage. Cartilage is a type of connective tissue & consists of cells, chondrocytes, embedded in an intercellular matrix synthesised & secreted by them. The capsule seen here originally contained a chondrocyte. The cartilage matrix occupies the rest of the frame & is composed of connective collagen and elastin fibres. Hyaline articular cartilage covers the ends of long bones & its smooth & slippery surface facilitates movement of the joints. Magnification: x3635 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x6000 at 4x5 inch size.
