False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a single shaft of permed human hair. The effect of the perming has been to strip away the overlapping plates, or scales, which normally make up the outer surface of the hair, & which are thought to reduce hair matting. Hair consists largely of keratin, a fibrous protein. Magnification: x170 at 35mm size. Brown/gold tint. Original is BW print P720/10M.
