Feldhausen 20-foot telescope. This reflector telescope (centre left) was built in Feldhausen, South Africa, in 1834, by the British astronomer John Herschel (1792-1871). This was part of Herschel's expedition to South Africa during the years 1833 to 1838. Herschel and his wife set up home at Feldhausen, an estate on the south-east side of Table Mountain. His observations at this time included that of Comet Halley in 1835. This artwork, dated September 1834, was the frontispiece of Herschel's book Observations at the Cape of Good Hope (1847), which was published on his return to England.
