French calculating machine. Late-18th century calculating machine from France. The machine consists of a series of six rotating cylinders marked with numbers, and a grid for adding numbers in the hinged lid. Roman numerals at right mark the nine levels of numbers on the cylinders. This type of calculating machine is known as a rotary calculator, and operates in a similar way to an abacus, achieving multiplication by repeated addition.
