First global flight without refuelling. This aeroplane is the Rutan Voyager, also called Model 76 Voyager, and was the first aircraft to fly around the world continuously without stopping or refuelling. This flight took nine days from when the plane took off from the Edwards Air Force Base in California, USA, on 14th December 1986. Voyager flew westerly and covered a total of 42,432 kilometres, with an average speed of 187 kilometres per hour, before returning to base. The plane was made from fibreglass, carbon fibre and kevlar, making it very lightweight. It weighed just 426 kilograms when empty. After the flight, it was preserved for display at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC, USA.
