Male kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) perched on a branch. Male and female kingfishers look very similar. They can be distinguished by the colour of their beaks. The beak of a male kingfisher is entirely black, while the lower half of a female's beak is a reddish-orange colour. The kingfisher is found throughout Eurasia and Africa. It feeds on fish, aquatic insects and crustaceans.
