A Dassanech man stands on one leg in typical pose while looking after his family's cattle in the Omo Delta, one of the largest inland deltas in the world. The extensive scarification on his chest and shoulders denotes that he has killed an enemy. The scars are cut with a knife or razor blade; then ash is rubbed in to produce the raised effect. His decorated clay hairdo is common among Dassanech men who always carry with them small wooden stools, which double up as pillows at night. The Omo Delta of southwest Ethiopia is one of the least accessible and least developed parts of East Africa. As such, the culture, social organization, customs and values of the people have changed less than elsewhere. The Dassanech speak a language of Eastern Cushitic origin. They practice animal husbandry and fishing as well as agriculture.
