A Dorze man sits outside his home smoking locally-grown tobacco using a traditional long-stemmed pipe. Living in highlands west of the Abyssinian Rift Valley, the Dorze have a unique style of building their homes. The construction begins with a twenty-foot-high woven bamboo frame, which is then covered with the sheaths of bamboo stems or straw to resemble a giant beehive. Doorways are set in a bulge of the house, which forms a reception area for guests; they are small enough for a person of average height to stoop low before entering. These remarkable houses can last for forty years or more. Dorze men are synonymous with weaving the best cotton cloth in Ethiopia. This man had woven his colourful attire himself.
