A mother and child outside a Konso house in southwest Ethiopia. All the high-pitched, thatched roofs of Konso houses are topped with earthenware pots to keep out rain. Hanging beneath the eaves of this house is a traditional cylindrical beehive. The woman's skirt is typical of the style worn by Konso women and is made from thick cotton cloth, called buluko, weaved locally by men. Women will only help their menfolk to flatten the warp and weft by flaying the cloth.
