Candi Mendut temple, 8-9th century, near Borobodur, Java, Indonesia. The Mendut temple, 3km east of Borobudur, has a magnificent statue of Buddha seated with two disciples. He is three metres high and sits with both feet on the ground, rather than in the usual lotus position. Mendut is said to face toward Benares, India, where Buddha Gautama taught his five disciples. This smaller temple of Mendut, and the Candi Pawon temple, form an integral part of the Borobudur complex.
