In the weeks leading up to their circumcision, Samburu boys must wear charcoal-blackened cloaks, which are made from three goatskins by their mothers. They also style their hair in a tuft at the back of their skulls. The elders of the tribe harangue them frequently. Uncircumcised boys are considered children whatever their age. They have no standing in the tribe and do not belong to an age-set.
