A young Sao Tomense fisherman throws out fishing nets from his bamboo boat. He is from a fishing village called the Praia das Burros. Praia das Burros means 'beach of stupid people'. It was named this because it was first settled by runaway slaves and no on believed that they would survive there - and of course they did. Sao Tom? and Princip? is Africa's second smallest country with a population of 193 000. It consists of two mountainous islands in the Gulf of New Guinea, straddling the equator, west of Gabon. Princip? is the smaller of the two islands with a population of around 5000.
