The grave of Frederick Courteney Selous in the 48,000-square-kilometre Game Reserve of Southern Tanzania, which was named after him. Selous came to Africa at the age of 20 and became a keen naturalist, hunter and early conservationist. A veteran of the Matabele wars, he took up arms again in the First World War at the age of 64. He was killed on 4th January 1917 leading a company of 25th Royal Fusiliers against a large German contingent encamped along the low hills of Beho-Beho. One of the largest protected areas in the world, the Selous Game Reserve was declared a World Heritage Site in 1982.
