Bananas are grown everywhere in Uganda. Originally native to Southeast Asia, there are now more banana and plantain varieties in the Great Lakes Region of Central Africa than any other place of the world. Green bananas cooked like potatoes and known as matoke are Uganda's national dish.Farmers take them to market on reinforced bicycles as many as five heavy bunches at a time.
