Bibi Khanum mosque. Construction started in 1399 by Timur, the mosque was built as Samarkand's main place of worship and dedicated to Timur's favourite wife, Sarai Mulk (Bibi) Khanum, a Mongolian princess of surpassing beauty. 500 stonemasons worked on the 130m x 100 m building. 95 elephants were brought from India to Samarkand to ccarry building materials.
