Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace (1815-1852), known as Ada Lovelace, English mathematician and the first computer programmer. Lovelace was the only child of Lord Byron, and was privately tutored through her early life especially as she suffered several bouts of illness. She showed great aptitude for mathematics, and knew Mary Somerville who introduced Lovelace to Charles Babbage. Lovelace translated Menabrea?s memoir on Babbage?s Analytical Engine from Italian, and added copious notes of her own including a program to calculate Bernoulii numbers. This was the first computer program. Lovelace died of uterine cancer at the age of just 36.
