Johann Jakob Guggenbuehl (1816-1863), Swiss physician. Guggenbuehl was educated at Zurich and Bern, graduating in medicine in 1838. In 1840 he was struck by the sight of a child with cretinism. He was convinced that cretinism could be cured through gentle exercise, good food and a good environment. In 1842 he built a hospital on the Abendberg, a mountain near Interlaken, in which he tested his ideas. In the clean mountain air, the children were gven a healthy diet and therapeutic activities along with school lessons. Although his ideas showed promise, his other duties took Guggenbuehl away from the hospital and the regime lapsed without his personal management. During his life he was internationally famous, although he is little heard of today.
