Spider silk extraction. Silk being extracted my machine from a spider, using a system developed by Gerard Fievet, in Lyon, France. This is the rear of the spider's abdomen, with the silk thread (upper left) emerging from the spinneret. This spider, from Madagascar, is a golden silk orb-weaver (from the Nephila genus). 200 metres of silk can be harvested per hour from each spider.
