19th century trepan drill. A trepan was a surgical instrument used to drill a hole in the skull in order to treat health problems related to intracranial diseases. It was often used to relieve pressure beneath the surface. Photographed in the museum of the National Veterinary School of Alfort, Maisons-Alfort, France.
