Martian sand dunes. Coloured satellite image of wind-blown sand dunes in the Western Nereidum Montes of Mars. The sand is dark-coloured due to its basalt rock origin. The light-coloured area is bedrock. Image obtained by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) on 9th May 2009. The width of this image is roughly 2.9 kilometres across.
