Acorn barnacle, Close-up of an acorn barnacle (Semibalanus balanoides, white centre) with its cirri (feathery appendages) exposed. This marine crustacean is common in the intertidal zones of north-western Europe and both coasts of North America, where it lives on rocks and other solid surfaces. It uses its cirri to filter food from the water.
