Mesha Stele. Illustration of part of the text on the Mesha Stele, also known as the Moabite stone. The basalt stone bears an inscription by Mesha, the Moabite king, from circa 840BC. It is written in Moabite, a Canaanite language similar to Hebrew. The words are separated from each other by dots and the sentences by vertical lines. It celebrates the victories of Mesha over the Israeli House of Omri, which the text says had been oppressing the Moabites. This account has many consistencies with the historical events recorded in the Bible.
