Coloured enraving of a Neolithic man (late Stone Age) about to hurl a projectile. He wears a polished stone axe fitted into a socket in a wooden handle and fastened in place with a strip of leather. He has a necklace of stone, pieces of bone or shells, threaded onto a leather cord. At his feet lie another axe, a spear, the jawbone of a large mammal and a large stone for polishing and fashioning hatchets. Such a stone was found at Varenne-Saint-Hilaire, France in 1860. The progress from chipped stone tools to polished stone tools coincided with the emergence of agriculture, animal domestication and the introduction of pottery.A nomadic way of life was replaced by settlements. Ground stone and polished stone implements for grinding, cutting and chopping became widespread. The Neolithic or late Stone Age occurred circa 7000 BC to 2500 BC. It was superseded by the Bronze Age.
