World at night, satellite image. This data was obtained by the OLS (Operational Linescan System) camera on the DMSP (Defense Meteorological Satellite Program) satellites operated by the US Air Force. The OLS sensor is extremely sensitive, detecting faint amounts of both visible and infrared light. Non-city lights include gas flares in the North Sea and the lights from fishing fleets in the South Atlantic (Falklands) and Sea of Japan. Europe, the eastern United States and Japan have large concentrations of city lights, while the interiors of Africa, Asia, Australia and South America are largely dark.
