Entomologist collecting flying insects with a light trap at night in a tropical rainforest. The light trap consists of a bright light shone on a sheet, attracting flying insects, especially moths and butterflies, in their hundreds. It is not clear why this happens, but one theory is that bright lights confuse insects that use the Moon to navigate. Insects are one of the most diverse groups of animals, and it is common for collections like this to result in the discovery of a new insect species. Photographed in Ecuador.
