Fallow deer (Dama dama). This stag still has the vascular layer of velvet covering his antlers. This layer supplies oxygen and nutrients to the growing bone. Once the antlers are fully grown, the velvet is shed and the antler bone dies. This deer is found across much of Europe. It spends most of its life living in a single sex herd, but the herds come together during the breeding season in the autumn. This deer inhabits woodland and meadows, and feeds on grasses, leaves and berries. It can reach a height of over a metre. Photographed in the Alps, in France.
